Auto Pilot? Redux

Well, isn't this an interesting kettle of fish? Geek readers will have heard about Google's Blogger Service going offline Wednesday evening for 20.5 Hours. It began with a scheduled Maintenance Outage and something went wrong causing corrupted files and a prolonged loss of functionality. Millions of Blogs were affected, and many still suffer missing entries.

I happened to be composing at the time and my first draft of "Auto Pilot?" disappeared into the ether. At the time I was just pissed, but once I rewrote my blog my displeasure turned to disappointment. Surely the lost blog had something the rewrite lacked. Well stranger things have happened...tonight the "Lost Auto Pilot" returned to the Blogger Radar Screen. I was fixing to write tomorrow's piece and there it was in my queue of posts!

So please indulge me while I hang my soiled laundry out where everyone can see it, stains and all. I've italicized the original "Lost Blog" and inserted it paragraph for paragraph to see if indeed my first take was better than the redux. The non-italic paragraphs in quotes are the redux.

Am I running on Auto Pilot? Running on Empty? I can't tell yet.

"Am I running on Auto Pilot? Running on Empty? I can't tell yet".

"Wednesday was a semi-lazy day around the Ancestral Digs until we ran to the other side of the county to pick up some live dungeness crabs at the Inland Valley's newest Asian Grocery Store."

Wednesday morning, I called SturgeUrge at work and suggested that he invite BajaBabe and myself over for dinner, and that we'd bring dinner...live crab, a tossed green salad, fresh raspberries, a bottle of bubbly, and a loaf of San Francisco Sourdough. "Sounds like a plan, see you at 7PM" Urge replied.

"Wednesday morning, I phoned SturgeUrge at work and told him he should invite BajaBabe and me over for dinner. "We'll bring dinner" I said..."live dungees, a tossed green salad, fresh raspberries, a bottle of bubbly, and a loaf of San Francisco Sourdough". "Sounds good Urge replied", 'be there at seven'"

Out at the Asian Grocery, the crab tank was nearly empty. The fish monger warned me that most of the crab were missing some legs...I told him I wanted three crabs...preferably with two claws, and he delivered. I don't know if the crabbers are still fishing, or if the grocery was just waiting on the next delivery, but I felt a little like a vulture shopping at the amputation ward...just sayin'...

"We rolled out to the county's newest Asian Grocery to pick up the crab, and the crab tank was nearly empty. The fish monger warned me that many of the crab were missing legs. I told him that was OK as long as they had two claws. He served up three of the survivors, and we were on our way. I must admit I felt a little weird...like a vulture shopping the amputee ward maybe?"

At the SturgeUrge Compound, Urge made quick work of putting together a fine repast. Steamed crab with all the fixins...which means with as little extra jazz as possible! The crab was delicious, the stories engaging and towards the end of dinner we tuned in the Giants game.

"Anyway, Urge made quick work of putting dinner together. Steamed crab, a nice homemade balsamic vinaigrette, and as always an eye pleasing presentation. The conversation was lively and the dinner delicious. Near the end we turned on the Giants game, they were leading in the 6th inning.
We said good night before the game ended...it was after all a work night for Urge!"

We skedaddled before the game was over...it was a work night for SturgeUrge after all...I watched the 9th inning back at the Ancestral Digs, the Giants won their 5th straight and are now tied for first place in the NL West.

I was so tired, I didn't pen a CorduroyPlanet blog before I fell asleep. I did however check the Reno AFD to see if there was any more confidence in the weekend forecast. Not so much last night, but the morning run seemed to be going our way...at least a little. They are calling for snow showers and low snow levels Saturday into Sunday.

"I watched the game winning out back at the Ancestral Digs and fell asleep before I could pen today's CorduroyPlanet blog. The Giants have now won six in a row, and are tied with Colorado for First Place! I did scan the Reno AFD to see if the model runs were giving them more or less confidence in the weekend forecast for the bicycle race. Last night, they were still saying snow down to lake level."

For the bicycle race, there might be a little trouble for Sunday's Stage One...especially on Brockway Summit, though the AMGEN Tour of California organizers say they're ready for snow. Monday's Stage 2 that goes right thru my bailiwick looks OK as of this hour.

"This morning that snow has become showers, though the AMGEN Tour of California organizers say they're ready for snow. If anything there's a greater likelihood of the weather impacting Stage One over Brockway Summit Sunday than the Stage 2 climb over Old Highway 40's Lincoln Highway climb over Donner Summit, where BajaBabe and I will be spectating.

Well, it's still four days 'till Stage 2...with any luck, the whole shebang will track north! Doesn't really matter either way, I just want to watch the best in the world ride over my favorite bit of mountain asphalt! I'm especially looking forward to seeing Luxemburger Andy Schleck, my pick to win this July's Tour de France."

Well, memory isn't all it's cracked up to be...I find the differences subtle at best...though after reading through both versions a few times, I like the redux better than the original (save for the paragraph where I used "skedaddle")

Please feel free to leave a comment, snarky or not. Let me know what you think...I'll return to my usual ways tomorrow...unless I hear otherwise from you all.

What of the AMGEN and the Weather Forecast, you ask? The Organizers and their Municipal partners in the area held a press conference Friday and announced another Presser on Saturday morning when they believe they'll have a better handle on the Sunday forecast, a good enough handle to give the Go/No Go Call. I'll be watching online and adjust our departure to Truckee accordingly.

Forecast Model Runs from both the Reno and Sacramento NWS Offices are in agreement. Three inches at Lake Level and six inches over the Passes Sunday morning. That's enough snowfall for chain controls to go up on Interstate 80. The Organizers say a postponement is possible...Stay tuned Folks!

Welcome To Tumblr

Well, Blogger was offline overnight, or as the Blogger Fail Page said..."Blogger is Unavailable"so I scratched this out on Tumblr instead.

We enjoyed another fine day here in the Inland Valley…though we were guilty of the Mortal Sin Sloth. I have an excuse..I’m still resetting my BodyClock…BajaBabe is probably getting a “Contact High” as it were…maybe she’s been on vacation too long? Or it’s too hot at the Ancestral Digs? I dunno…

We did go to the Farmer’s Market, and we did shop for some new Sauté Pans…three “Home Stores” no Joy…but really, we laid about most of the day doing little but viewing TV. OK, I watched the Giants win another game against the Diamondbacks (for the sweep)

For dinner I made an heirloom tomato and cucumber salad and steamed asparagus served with fresh out of the oven Sourdough Bread.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the Reno AFD…there will be snow for Sunday’s Stage One of the AMGEN Tour of California bicycle race, though Monday’s Stage 2 over Old Highway 40’s Donner Summit should be snow-free.

I’m getting pretty jazzed about the race…I watched VersusTV’s AMGEN ToC Preview Show this afternoon…I’m liking Andy Schleck for the ToC and Le Tour de France in July.

I feel like I'm making some progress on my BodyClock reset...I slept through the night again and awoke minutes before my alarm went off at 0600 I tuned in the Armstrong & Getty Radio Show and fell back asleep...I guess you could say I'm still a work in progress...

Auto Pilot?

Am I running on Auto Pilot? Running on Empty? I can't tell yet.

Making Progress

From where I sit, it's hard to tell where exactly I'm at.

I have slept all the way through the night for the past two nights, so the BodyClock reset project seems to be on track...I'm still feeling body weary in the evening...maybe a few more days then...

My first week at the Ancestral Digs has hit most of the bases so far. Mom's doin' fine, BajaBabe made it to town and we're having a fine old time. The San Francisco Bay halibut have gone on the bite, but the wind is still keeping a lid on Salmon Season.

I did see some disturbing Tweets this evening however...KCRA3's @MarkFinan tweeted this...then this...and now this! Steady Dave...Sunday's five days out still...and the models Finan cites are the Sacramento Office's runs...best taken with a grain of salt!

There is a lot of snow on the ground over Old Highway 40's Donner Summit (Stage 2 of the AMGEN Tour of California) I can't imagine that there's much chance of measurable snowfall in mid-May...though there's still some La Niña residual hanging around...and I have seen snow every month of the year up there...the Morning News showed radar echoes of showers over the Tahoe Sierra, Jeweler said: "Just a dusting on Donner Summit, but four inches reported in South Lake Tahoe"!

I checked the webcams, but I didn't actually see any evidence of new snow...

We'll put all this weather speculation on the back burner for a few days and wait to see what shakes out...

I watered the Ancestral Diggins for the first time today, and researched for some solid answers on my irrigation automation install. I haven't checked the soil temps yet, but I'm definitely not late planting-wise. I've got all my difficult to find seeds in stock and they should be sprouting soon. BajaBabe and I will scout the local nurseries this afternoon for candidates to cultivate.

We had a visitor to the Diggins in the morning too..she was camera shy, but I got a snap of her before my ham-handed "stalking skills" spooked her...

We squired my Mom to her monthly Church Social today and had a grand old time in spite of the fact that attendance was off by maybe 40%...Lot's of God's Children opted for tropical renewal after the long cold, wet Winter I'd wager!

A Good Tired

I slept through the night last night, despite setting my alarm for 0500 to watch the Grand Prix of Turkey LIVE in HD. My DVR watched it too, but in standard def, not HD. I actually saw the start and the first 9-10 laps before I fell back asleep. A travel day really takes it out of a fella...

Saturday, BajaBabe flew into Oakland. I picked her up and we started by figuring out how long it's been since we'd last met face to face. Turns out it's been five years since she was in town...or rather near town, we met in Reno for an afternoon of messing about on errands and fast food. Our one and only trip to Sonic...neither of us was impressed.

On the way home to the Ancestral Digs, we stopped in El Cerrito for Casper's Famous Hot Dogs. Best hot dogs evah!

My Mom and BajaBabe haven't seen each other for way longer than five years, but they get along famously still. Sister K phoned, saying she'd be here in a half an hour...Mother's Day was filling up! I made Rhubarb Braised Pork Chops, and Yellow Crookneck Soup. After dinner I watched the Giants win again in dramatic fashion. Before I finally turned in, I caught up with the Formula One Circus and watched Qualifying from Istanbul on the DVR.

Rested, but still feeling physically tired, I got out of bed around 9 AM this morning. Sister K and BajaBabe were up and the French Roast was brewed. I drank coffee, chewed the fat, and scanned the Sunday paper's ads before retiring to the Den to watch the Turkish GP. Man, the new rules certainly have raised the excitement level. Lots of passing on the track this season...all the way through from the front to the back of the running order.

After the race, I made breakfast Huevos Rancheros w/ vine ripe heirloom tomatoes I picked up at the local Farmer's Market on the way to the Airport Saturday. Delicious, but really a tease of what's coming down the pike once the weather warms.

BajaBabe wondered what we were having for dinner. I'm craving fresh, wild California King Salmon, and the Commercial season opened earlier this week. I called the local fish monger and he said the price was too high for their blood, but try again Wednesday or Thursday. I know from my online fishing club that sport salmon has been a slow pick, which is to say slow so far. Winds have been keeping the fishing effort low, so the intel is slow coming, too. The fishing reports did feature San Francisco Bay Halibut in decent numbers for the first time this season...hello SturgeUrge!

Dinner menu can wait until the game's over...I'm layin' on the bed watching the game and feeling that good satisfied tired. The BodyClock reset is coming along nicely so far.
